A Brief Introduction to Formula 1

Everyone likes to see a good show. Sometimes it is a TV show, at other times, it could be a movie. People also enjoy watching sports and they spend lots of their time following the careers of athletes and star players, to eventually earn some money by betting on them, or to have some of their passion rub off on their lives, inspiring them to do better.

Some people enjoy motorsports more than physical sports. Motorsports are really fun, addictive, very fast and typically, very dangerous. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of open car racing. Here is everything you should know about it, a brief introduction to the world of fast open car racing.

The European Championship of Grand Prix Racing

As it often is, everything has to have a beginning and the same has to be true for Formula 1. Formula 1 originated in Europe and through the above mentioned European Championship. These events were held in the 1920s and 1930s. The championship changed race courses, but that depended on which were available at the time.

The formula is basically a nomenclature, one that was adopted by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, also known as FIA, after World War II. Formula is a series of all kinds of open car racing sports, and the formula is a set of regulations for that specific series of racing. Formula 1 is the highest level of open wheel single seater formula racing.

The first Formula race, under the name Formula 1, was held in Turin, also known as the 1946 Turin Grand Prix.

How It Works – Formula 1 Explained

Formula 1 is relatively simple. Drivers would need to qualify by having their best time determine their position in the grid. The grid typically consists of 26 racers, for qualifications and the races. If there are more drivers, then they are still positioned by their rankings in the qualifications. The races allow drivers to earn points over the season, the Grand Prix races being worth more than the regular ones.

After the regular season ends, there are larger competitions, such as the World Championship. Formula 1 is really fast and dangerous, but over the decades, there have been many safety improvements to both the cars as well as to the regulations, to the asphalt and the tires, making the sport as safe as it could be, given the speed and the number of variables involved.

Is Formula 1 Safe?

This is the main problem with Formula 1. It is hard to call it safe, given how many racers have died through various accidents or technological flaws. Formula 1 is a motorsport that has racers going very fast, with speeds up to 160 MPH or around 260 KMH. This is just the average speed over the course of a season.

Have in mind that the cars can be much faster at certain parts of a circuit, and they most often are. Given the sheer number of drivers at a race, 20 to be exact, the likelihood of an accident happening is very large. Formula 1 cars have become safer over the ages, typically major changes happening after a racer dies, which is unfortunate, but often the way any industry evolves.

Formula 1 is pretty interesting and if you want to see a good race, you should tune in and watch the next Grand Prix. Catch one live to experience the thrill of Formula 1.
